Description

Why do vertical currents happen in the ocean?

Vertical movements of water in the ocean are important for distributing nutrients needed to support ocean ecosystem.

These movements can bring cool nutrient rich water from deep in the ocean to the surface (upwelling) and send warmer surface water downwards to the sea bed (downwelling).

Upward currents are especially important at the coasts for wildlife and fishing as they provide the nutrients needed by plankton that are the base of the sea food chain.
